Synopsis: Fifteen-year-old Roxy is burning. Lost somewhere between the bonfire of girlhood and the sharp edge of womanhood, she gathers her friends and begins meddling in witchcraft to search for answers. Moonset is a tale of love, rage and self-discovery, as four young women search for the power they were promised.

Set/Costume Requirements: Costume can be naturalistic - The costume for Roxy, Bushra, Gina and Joanne are British style school uniforms that are adaptable through the play. And Roxy’s mother, Shideh wears comfortable clothes or her nursing uniform.

The set works in two ways - as the literal fly tipped wasteland down the back of the local shops which becomes a ritual site for the girls AND also gestural as the objects, furniture emerge from the wasteland to signify different spaces in Roxy’s world and memory. In the current production there are also a series of circles on the ground - these represent the coven’s ritual circles and also the cycling of the moon.

Bio: Maryam is a writer for stage, screen and radio, following a long career as an actor. She was born in Iran, raised in England and has lived in Scotland for over 20 years. She likes to collide genres to un-crack the joy, pain and messiness of immigrant experience, matrilineal ties and power imbalances.

She has most recently written The Words for Glasgow’s Lunchtime theatre, A Play, A Pie & A Pint and Ghost Stories: I look down on myself for Pitlochry Festival Theatre, as well as two short form radio plays Govanhill for BBC Radio 4’s ‘United Kingdom’ series and Drivetime for BBC Radio Scotland. Her one woman show The Chronicles of Irania (co-writer Catrin Evans) was shortlisted for the Amnesty International ‘Freedom of Expression Award’. For TV she has written multiple episodes of kids comedy drama Molly & Mack (BBC), Silverpoint (Zodiak Kids) and Hollyoaks (Lime) alongside ongoing development of a number of her own original TV projects. She was a recipient of Screen Scotland & BBC Writers Room’s inaugural Drama Development Programme. She has also written and directed short films Bahar (Moquette films/Short Circuit/BFI Network) and Bloody Love (Clan/SFTN). Maryam received the Playwright’s Studio Scotland, 'New Playwright’s Award' to develop her play Moonset, which is in production with the Citizens Theatre in February 2023.
